SteamWorld Heist 2
On August 8th, SteamWorld Heist 2 makes its grand entrance on practically everything that plays games—PS4, PS5, PC, Switch, Xbox One, and Series X/S. I’m a total sucker for that side-scrolling, turn-based, real-time aiming loop, and now it’s back with a salty sea-dog twist. As Captain Quincy Leeway, you recruit a ragtag crew of Steambots to solve a catastrophic water crisis. The new Job system is a game-changer: mix and match weapons to switch classes on the fly, level up, and cook up some wild skill combos. Plus, there’s real-time naval combat in the overworld. If that doesn’t float your boat, I don’t know what will.
Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered
Man, it feels like forever since the Freelance Police graced my screen. On August 14th, Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered hits PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch, bringing back Telltale’s 2010 gem with a fresh coat of paint. Right on the heels of College Football 26 (what a year for gridiron fanatics!), Madden NFL 25 arrives August 16th on pretty much every platform imaginable. I’m really curious to see if BOOM Tech, the new physics-based tackling system, can shake things up. Carrier balance and recovery have been retooled too, so you might actually power through a hit now. New broadcast teams and a revamped Franchise mode are icing, but let’s be real—can it steal the spotlight from its college cousin? We’ll know soon enough.
Black Myth: Wukong
Four long years of waiting, and Game Science finally delivers. On August 20th, Black Myth: Wukong lands on PS5 and PC, and I’m ready to lose myself in this Journey to the West fever dream. You’re the Destined One, wielding a staff that extends like nobody’s business and facing down over 100 enemies across about 15 hours. The Unreal Engine 5 visuals are straight-up sorcery—every fight looks like a painting come to life. Between the breakneck melee, slick dodging, and wild magical abilities, my hype-o-meter is redlining.
Dustborn
From the minds behind Dreamfall Chapters, Red Thread Games drops Dustborn on August 20th for last-gen and current systems alike. It’s an oddball road trip across a dystopian republic, and you play as Pax, an Anomal who can literally boss people around with words. You’ll be bashing robots, chatting up your eccentric crew, and making decisions that supposedly have major story repercussions. The art style is loud, the premise is bonkers, and I’m all in.
Concord
Hero shooters are a dime a dozen these days, but Concord from Firewalk Studios might just carve out its niche. Launching August 23rd on PS5 and PC, it’s packing 12 maps and 6 modes right out of the gate, with hundreds of cosmetic items to unlock and no Battle Pass nonsense—refreshing, right? After a beta that drew mixed buzz, I’m keeping an open mind. For $39.99, if the gunplay is tight and the character Variants click, I could see myself mainlining this for weeks.
World of Warcraft: The War Within
A brand new WoW trilogy kicks off on August 22nd with The War Within, and as a lapsed Azerothian, my interest is piqued. Online modes and a Diorama function round out the package. As someone who spent way too much time in Gundam Breaker 3, this is a day-one buy.
Monster Jam Showdown
There’s a distinct lack of racing games this month, but Monster Jam Showdown on August 29th aims to fill that gap. Available on all platforms, it puts you behind the wheel of over 40 monster trucks tearing through off-road chaos. The non-linear Showdown Tour and Extreme Freestyle mode sound like dumb fun. It’s not going to dethrone Forza, but sometimes you just need to crush cars and do backflips without overthinking it.
Squirrel with a Gun
Okay, you had me at “squirrel.” Squirrel with a Gun launches August 29th on PC (with Xbox Series X/S later in the fall), and it is exactly as insane as it sounds. It’s a sandbox shooter where you, a fluffy rodent, wield rocket launchers and six-shooters against mysterious Agents. You can cause mayhem around the neighborhood, solve light puzzles, and platform like a furry John Wick. I have absolutely no idea if this will be a masterpiece or a beautiful trainwreck, but I’m here for it.
Deathbound
Souls fans, rejoice. Deathbound launches August 8th on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and it’s bringing a fresh twist to the formula. Set in a world where medieval grit clashes with sci-fi relics, you’re a warrior who can switch between fallen comrades’ fighting styles on the fly. Synergizing spirits to fill a sync meter for devastating attacks is the core of combat, and I’m already dreading the boss gauntlets. With over 20 hours of gameplay and New Game Plus, I’m ready to die repeatedly.
Level Zero: Extraction
Extraction shooters might be flooding the market, but Level Zero: Extraction is looking to break the mold when it enters early access on PC on August 13th. You and two buddies gear up with highly customizable military weapons to scavenge loot and extract, all while avoiding mines, mutants, and the real nightmare: opposing players controlling an invisible alien with an EMP. It’s Escape from Tarkov meets GTFO with a dash of sci-fi horror, and if the execution holds up, this could be the dark horse of the month.
